My Fantastic Year in Ireland: Learning English and growing as a person

Ciao everyone! My name is Sofia, I’m 16, and I’m from Lucca in Italy. I spent a whole year in Ireland to improve my English, and it turned out to be one of the most best experiences of my life. So, I want to tell you all about it!

I lived with a lovely host family in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.  Ruth, her husband Paul and their 3 kids, plus their dog - Ruffy.  From the moment I arrived, they made me feel like part of the family. They were always so patient and supportive, especially when I struggled with my English at first. I got to experience Irish life up close, and one of the things I loved was how we ate dinner together as a family every evening. My host Mother made the most amazing roast lamb on Sundays, which quickly became my favourite dish!

I attended 5th year in the local secondary school, and even though I was nervous at the start, it turned out to be fantastic. I made so many friends, and what surprised me the most was how friendly and open everyone was, even the teachers. My classmates were really kind, and I even taught them some Italian phrases, which was funny.  My classmates really helped me to improve my English.  Especially in all the after-school activities I did with them.

My English improved a lot over the year. Being in a classroom where everything was in English helped me get used to the language so quickly. I also practiced speaking with my friends, teachers, and host family every day. By the end of the year, I was so much more confident in my speaking and writing. It feels great to be able to have conversations without worrying so much about making mistakes and being embarrassed.

Ireland is a very beautiful country. I got to explore different parts of it, and my favorite place to visit was Galway. We visited on a weekend trip, and I fell in love with its colourful streets, the music, and the friendly atmosphere. Walking along the Salthill Promenade and looking out at the Atlantic Ocean was so beautiful.

But for me what made this year truly special were the people I met. Everyone I met, from my host family to my teachers and my new friends in school, were so helpful. Even if I was struggling with English or feeling homesick, there was always someone ready to cheer me up or help me out. My host family in Kingscourt became like a second family to me.

Looking back, this year in Ireland was more than just learning English—it was about growing as a person. I’ve become more independent, more confident, and I’ve made special memories. If you’re thinking about studying in Ireland, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an adventure you’ll never forget.
